Movie Review - Sivaji

This has happened to me before. In the case of Snakes on a Plane. SOAP was a much hyped movie, and the premise was astounding. Putting two of peoples greatest fears... flying and snakes together in a movie along with Sam Jackson... one other mortal fear. It took me a couple of hours to actually accept to myself that the movie, in spite of its much hyped, much promised aura, is a remarkable flop in terms of entertainment value.

Sivaji is no different. This movie, flops in every sense of the word. This movie flops even if you disregard the lack of originality in Shankar's direction, ignore the pointless and half assed action sequences, and turn a blind eye to the blatant disregard to anything remotely resembling logic. The movie looks like as if someone had used flash movie maker to make the resume of a kindergarten student. And yet as a HR person, you are forced to consider it for a software architect position.

I watched this movie pretty late... the third week of release, and I was warned to not expect anythign great, and that the movie must be watched for Rajni and Rajni alone. So I prepared myself well, by leaving expectations of coherence, good screenplay and decent acting at home, in the freezer. I was prepared for the SS patented 'style', some gimmicks and a few childish feel good moments.

What I got was some horribly partisan gimmicks... (come on.. do you really think that throwing a chewing gum into your mouth by bouncing it off things is 'style'?), jarring BGM, and a few cliches strung together. That maketh the movie. The only 'new' thing that this movie offers is that Rajni has painted himself pink for one song.

It took me a few hours to accept that inspite of all the self build-up, SOAP was infact a terrible movie. I expect the Thamizh audience to realize that Sivaji is a truly boring, aimless, self absorbed movie that was not worth even the first watch.

And guys... people will fool you by saying that the last 10 minutes of the movie was worth every paisa, and it must not be missed for anything in life. It is just their way of saying that the first 45 hours of the movie sucked donkey dong real hard. Do not believe them.

History re-written? When was it written first?

Once in a life-time ? I have heard that about only 4 Rajini movies so far :-).

And thanks for calling me an intellectual for for not liking one of the 'not so good' thamizh movies I have watched. YOu must have very low standards...

To be fair, the only part I liked in the entire movie was when he dresses himself as MGR, Sivaji and Kamal in a dream sequence.

I watched the movie twice . I accept i am a hard core Thalaivar fan. But that doesn any way make me a idiot who can accept anything. I watch all genre of movies and when it is a rajini movie i watch it the first day. Well you have been two harsh on the movie i would day. though there has n been much of newer stuff to offer from the director the movie is still awesome. !! May be opinions differ and it has defenitely differed at this point. I agree to disagree with you.
Valgha thalaivar , valarga avarathu pugal..
Ps: Check out a writting in my blog on Sivaji and the next one where i have actually criticized it. Im not saying this to prove anything !.,

I did read your take on Sivaji.. what is interesteing is that the reviews for the movie si polarized. Either they are the 'fans' who think Rajni has made movie history (I am not talking abotu collections) in this movie, and then tehre re these purported 'intellectuals' who think the movie sucks... much ado about nothing.

usually this happens only with the best movies :-).

I think the best way to review this movie is this... "You are certainly blessed if you can take pleasure from this movie... you are very easily satisfied"

Boss..
If you are trying to give a pinch of sarcasm on the last line of the comment , well i dont have much to say. Anyways there are always criticism , and as a good human i take criticism( i dont know why i assosciate so much with rajini :) !)..Anyways we are democratic and so way to to go!!.
Ps: by the way you write brilliant stuff..Im adding you in my links i find interesting !.

Thanks.. Arun, Not really. The last staement wasn't sarcasm... just commentary on how this movie is able to satisify so many people.. to eleicit such a negative response on anyone who would diss it.

There is no point in such a good director use such a good actor in such a drab movie.

What are these guys achieving ? How can a 20000 sq foot glass palace impress, if all it is used for is a song no1 even wanted?

How can 300 drums impress you, when they were used by an aged star.. who has trouble even running?

How can 60 crores impress you when all it does is a remake with really bad ideas

Actually the abd moments in the movie outnumbered the good moments... Rajni saying choo choo.. rajni saying "vaanga pazhagalaam.. solomon paapaya... those fight sequences where no1 actualyl bothers hitting... if rajni flies.. everyone else flies away from him... the BGM. aaah...

the last scene was the worst.. 'capitation fee kadaichachuuuu'... ??? see guys.. if you want to watch a movie only for Rajni.. please make a movie with ONLY rajni in it.. he plays the heroine too, he does the music, and he shoots it..

the moment you add other people, these things like expectations rise... which sort of screws perspective.

agree completely with mathi that this was one HONEST review!!!
What people(rajni devotees) that we also bought tickets and attempted to watch the movie and expecting "fire-works" from rajni+shankar combination! if not for vivek in the "pazhgalaam vandhurkom..." sequence, even male audience would've walked out to watch "Arasi" or "kolangal"

let me start by saying nice review. you have kept your standards of writing without getting bogged down by pressure. if u had asked me, i would have said its not a movie for you, esp. Sivaji. You need to understand that this movie is not of Shankar's... it is written for Rajni, who is considered the epitome of tamil cinema.

now i haven't yet watched the movie yet, so i cannot completely agree or disagree with your opinions here because i like to make my own opinions. That said, this movie is made for the "masses"... and not for guys like us who would want to watch a movie for what its worth.

Please don't think that i am not a Rajni fan. I am and probably will be. I always loved the way he portrays his character in the sliver screen. I will watch it sometime during this month and will scribble out my review. Don't forget to read it :-)

I understand.. Basha was also made for the 'masses'... and yet it was a good movie. The subset of movies that are made for the masses and are yet good movies is pretty big. Just that Sivaji does not fall under that category...

There was not one scene in Basha that could make you squirm in discomfort. I would have preferred to watch Basha once more, insread of watching this tripe.

Dai,

It is fair for you to put forth your views in your blog... We don't question it.... But a poll like that in your blog crosses the border... better take that off...
Are you will facing consequences..... Can be physical also... be careful...

Great review ..accept the fact the duo of greats Shankar and Rajni did not blend in well as expected ...Movie not made to Rajni's stature..I blame Shankar for this..

My review

Guyz guyz guyz... cooldown. I just want to see how many people who read this blog, think the same way as I do.

And kalyan, i can undertstand your view... but please do not brand me a 'psedo intellectual'.. because i could not enjoy Sivaji. I infact have enjoyed other monumental movies like Veerasamy, and Emtan Magan. My reviews of those movies are written proofs.

I would also not say Sivaji did not live up to expectations. I did not have ANY expectations when i jostled my way through the crowds in Sathyam cinemas , but was STILL disappointed.

I felt Basha was way more efficient as a Rajni movie than Sivaji is.

Loori, actually I felt that the chewing gum bouncing scenes were really cool as well as the coin toss scenes. For a Rajini movie, it was well worth it especially the second half. I expected a lot more but was still satisfied. Please have a look at a couple of articles in the following link to see how we enjoyed in San Diego. It's the whole experience that really mattered :)

I could not enjoy it even as much as I had enjoyed Vijaykanth's movies. they atleast have better dialogues.
